Serene was repriced today from S$800 to S$499. The intent: a doorway SKU accessible to every Singaporean, cross-subsidised by Tranquil and Eternal margins plus the binding 30%-to-charity dividend. This is not a price war — it is a deliberate move into the lead-gen / social tier.

1. Cheapest published wood casket in Singapore. Passage Serene at S$499 is now below every operator-published wood casket on the SG market. Casket Fairprice's basic pine list (~S$688) is undercut by ~28%. The only sub-S$499 alternative is the paper coffin operator (S$300 basic / S$600 elaborate), and that is paper — not FSC-certified solid timber.
2. Direct cremation comparison flips from parity to win. Passage Serene (S$499) + a-la-carte body care + hearse + cremation booking now totals ~S$1,499 — undercutting Singapore Casket Direct Cremation (S$1,635 w/GST) by ~S$236 and Casket Fairprice Funeral DC (S$1,888 nett) by ~S$389, with a solid FSC pine casket replacing the bundled panel-shape coffin. The dc-section math on products.html is updated to reflect this. Pine is the timber crematoria prefer (cleaner combustion vs particle-board), so the casket-quality story is now cleaner too.
3. Threat-level downgrades. Operators previously rated MEDIUM threat on the casket-only-transparent dimension — Casket Fairprice (operator-published basic pine ~S$688), Singapore Casket DC (S$1,635 panel-coffin bundle), Direct Funeral Services DC (S$1,800 / S$1,962) — all lose their "cheapest transparent" claim against Passage Serene at S$499. Threat re-rates to LOW on price; only differentiation now is bundle convenience (which Passage explicitly does not sell).
4. International benchmark band shifts to global floor. S$499 ≈ US$370. Below every US DTC entry tier (Millennium US$695, Costco US$999, Walmart US$899, Titan US$995) and roughly aligned with the Ecoffins UK floor (£195–£695 ≈ S$330–1,180). Passage Serene now sits at the global price-floor for FSC-certified solid-wood DTC casket retail. Reddit-validated international floor reset.
5. Addressable market widens for the compassionate / social ICP. S$499 opens a new cohort: low-income self-pay buyers above ComCare threshold who could not afford S$800 but can afford S$499. Free-casket programme cross-subsidy mechanics are unchanged (every Tranquil/Eternal still funds free Serene units at unit cost ~S$220), but forecast intake volume should be re-modelled — expect MSW / hospice referral channel to push more S$499 paid-buyers into the funnel before the free-casket pathway.
6. Margin caveat — Serene is now lead-gen, not profit engine. Indicative subcontractor cost from JB ~S$195–220 per Serene unit (Millennium / TSTee orders, see admin/index.html). Gross at S$499 = ~S$279–304 (~56% gross). Net of GST + delivery + 30%-to-charity allocation, contribution per Serene is thin. Sustainable only if (a) Tranquil/Eternal mix stays dominant, (b) Serene drives funnel into pre-arrangement / later Tranquil upgrades, or (c) the gap is treated as marketing + CSR spend with the lead-gen brand-building offset.
7. Cannibalisation watch. Some buyers who would have bought Tranquil at S$999 may downshift to Serene at S$499. Mitigants already in product copy: Tranquil retains "Most Popular · Best Value" badge with material upgrades (hardwood vs pine, ivory velvet vs white satin, brushed nickel handles, included floral arrangement) that Serene does not have. Monitor Serene/Tranquil mix monthly; if Tranquil share < 35% within 90 days, consider tightening Serene-to-Tranquil step-up callouts.
8. Whitespace canvas re-scoring. Cells previously held by mid-threat operators on "transparent casket-only" now belong decisively to Passage.
