The casket cost has been hidden long enough.
Here's everyone selling around it — and where Passage stands.
Top-5 Threat Radar
Five most-direct competitors plotted across five dimensions: price visibility, design quality, mobile experience, casket-only focus, and threat level. Passage occupies a quadrant nobody else does — DTC casket-only with full transparency.

Sourced Pricing Evidence
Where the casket-price ranges actually come from. Cited data points from the Singapore consumer regulator, SG forums, manual Reddit research, mainstream journalism, and operator-published quotes — replacing modelled estimates with named sources you can click through and verify. Now extended with international DTC benchmarks (Titan, Costco, Pure Cremation, Ecoffins) for positioning context, plus a direct-cremation operator-published pricing slice (panel-coffin floor 2026-04-29).
Serene becomes the lead-gen / compassionate-social headliner. The competitor landscape re-scores around it.
Serene was repriced today from S$800 to S$499. The intent: a doorway SKU accessible to every Singaporean, cross-subsidised by Tranquil and Eternal margins plus the binding 30%-to-charity dividend. This is not a price war — it is a deliberate move into the lead-gen / social tier.
- Cheapest published wood casket in Singapore. Passage Serene at S$499 is now below every operator-published wood casket on the SG market. Casket Fairprice's basic pine list (~S$688) is undercut by ~28%. The only sub-S$499 alternative is the paper coffin operator (S$300 basic / S$600 elaborate), and that is paper — not FSC-certified solid timber.
- Direct cremation comparison flips from parity to win. Passage Serene (S$499) + a-la-carte body care + hearse + cremation booking now totals ~S$1,499 — undercutting Singapore Casket Direct Cremation (S$1,635 w/GST) by ~S$236 and Casket Fairprice Funeral DC (S$1,888 nett) by ~S$389, with a solid FSC pine casket replacing the bundled panel-shape coffin. The dc-section math on
products.htmlis updated to reflect this. Pine is the timber crematoria prefer (cleaner combustion vs particle-board), so the casket-quality story is now cleaner too. - Threat-level downgrades. Operators previously rated MEDIUM threat on the casket-only-transparent dimension — Casket Fairprice (operator-published basic pine ~S$688), Singapore Casket DC (S$1,635 panel-coffin bundle), Direct Funeral Services DC (S$1,800 / S$1,962) — all lose their "cheapest transparent" claim against Passage Serene at S$499. Threat re-rates to LOW on price; only differentiation now is bundle convenience (which Passage explicitly does not sell).
- International benchmark band shifts to global floor. S$499 ≈ US$370. Below every US DTC entry tier (Millennium US$695, Costco US$999, Walmart US$899, Titan US$995) and roughly aligned with the Ecoffins UK floor (£195–£695 ≈ S$330–1,180). Passage Serene now sits at the global price-floor for FSC-certified solid-wood DTC casket retail. Reddit-validated international floor reset.
- Addressable market widens for the compassionate / social ICP. S$499 opens a new cohort: low-income self-pay buyers above ComCare threshold who could not afford S$800 but can afford S$499. Free-casket programme cross-subsidy mechanics are unchanged (every Tranquil/Eternal still funds free Serene units at unit cost ~S$220), but forecast intake volume should be re-modelled — expect MSW / hospice referral channel to push more S$499 paid-buyers into the funnel before the free-casket pathway.
- Margin caveat — Serene is now lead-gen, not profit engine. Indicative subcontractor cost from JB ~S$195–220 per Serene unit (Millennium / TSTee orders, see
admin/index.html). Gross at S$499 = ~S$279–304 (~56% gross). Net of GST + delivery + 30%-to-charity allocation, contribution per Serene is thin. Sustainable only if (a) Tranquil/Eternal mix stays dominant, (b) Serene drives funnel into pre-arrangement / later Tranquil upgrades, or (c) the gap is treated as marketing + CSR spend with the lead-gen brand-building offset. - Cannibalisation watch. Some buyers who would have bought Tranquil at S$999 may downshift to Serene at S$499. Mitigants already in product copy: Tranquil retains "Most Popular · Best Value" badge with material upgrades (hardwood vs pine, ivory velvet vs white satin, brushed nickel handles, included floral arrangement) that Serene does not have. Monitor Serene/Tranquil mix monthly; if Tranquil share < 35% within 90 days, consider tightening Serene-to-Tranquil step-up callouts.
- Whitespace canvas re-scoring. Cells previously held by mid-threat operators on "transparent casket-only" now belong decisively to Passage. The "low-income / compassionate access" cell jumps from 3 to 5 — Passage credibly serves every paid-buyer income tier from S$499 to S$1,299 plus S$0 for verified means-tested cases.
data/whitespace-framework.jsonnotes already updated to S$499 / S$999 / S$1,299.

CCCS Market Study on the Funeral Services Industry in Singapore
The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore commissioned a Blackbox Research consumer survey (n=500) and published findings that confirm the opacity thesis. This is the most defensible cite in the whole stack — government-backed, methodologically rigorous, post-2023, and quotable in any public-facing claim Passage makes.
17xaixi (CCCS-validated, with first-hand cost breakdowns from u/loservins and u/lizhien), r/AskUK evljcu (UK Co-op funeral itemised at £4,736), the r/frugal funeral-industry-insider AMA (FTC Funeral Rule + US burial floor), and r/mildlyinteresting 1dza6ba — the viral '$85 cardboard casket' post (82,000 upvotes, 5,907 comments, July 2024) — the strongest demand signal in the entire dataset for affordable / eco alternatives.

International DTC benchmarks (Reddit-validated)
The reference set for Passage's positioning. These DTC casket retailers and direct-cremation providers are widely cited on r/frugal, r/personalfinance and r/AskUK as the price floor in their home markets. Singapore has no equivalent DTC casket retailer with this level of price transparency — that gap is Passage's wedge.
Seven themes that emerge from the data
- 3-4× spread for "the same" wake. Posters describing nominally identical 3-day Buddhist / Taoist wakes report figures from ~$5K (Direct Funeral Services, Casket Fairprice, Seng Heng) to $17-23K (Singapore Casket, unnamed "atas" parlours). The 3-4× spread is the smoking gun for opacity — same service, wildly different bills.
- Direct cremation is the de facto floor, not a casket figure. When forum users want to anchor "honest minimum," they cite direct cremation (~$1.8-2K). Passage's positioning therefore benchmarks better against package inflation than against casket-only markup.
- The casket itself is rarely discussed as a line item — but the add-ons are. u/loservins (r/singapore 17xaixi) gave specific surprise add-on prices: backdrop ~$1,000, chanting ~$1,500, toilet facilities ~$700. u/lizhien added Mandai niche $500+. The casket-only markup is still modelled, but the S$5K → S$15K-20K final-bill arc is now Reddit-verified line-by-line. The hidden cost isn't one item — it's the cumulative drip.
- Singapore Casket = "atas" benchmark in lived language. Posters consistently use Singapore Casket as the upmarket reference. Ang Chin Moh, Trinity, and Nam Shan get effectively zero pricing discussion in user-quoted SGD figures — they appear on review aggregators but not in invoices.
- Religion-driven price tiering, not casket quality. Christian / free-thinker $4-5.4K, Buddhist $5.3-6.9K, Taoist $7.5-10K+, Muslim ~$1.4K. The casket inside these tiers is plausibly the same SKU; the variance is rituals + duration. Casket cost is decoupled from package price by design.
- Singapore has no DTC casket retailer with global price transparency. Titan US$995, Costco US$999, Walmart US$899, Pure Cremation £995, Ecoffins £195 — every one is Reddit-validated as the price floor in its home market. The FTC Funeral Rule (mandatory price disclosure + must-accept third-party caskets) protects US consumers; Singapore has no equivalent. CCCS confirmed the SG industry as "self-regulated and largely opaque". The viral r/mildlyinteresting cardboard-casket post (82k upvotes) is the global demand signal Passage is positioned to convert in SG.
- The "panel-coffin floor" exposes the casket-quality differentiator — and after the Serene S$499 reprice, also loses on price. Singapore Casket and Casket Fairprice publish direct cremation packages at S$1,500-1,888 with a panel / Model-S03 coffin bundled in. Backing out a generous S$200-400 wholesale on the coffin leaves S$1,100-1,500 for body collection + embalming + hearse + cremation booking. A Passage Serene customer sourcing those same a-la-carte services now hits ~S$1,499 — undercutting bundled by ~S$236-389 AND with FSC-certified solid pine vs a particle-board panel. Implication for Passage: do not sell the bundle. Publish the a-la-carte math on a public-facing FAQ (already live in
products.html#direct-cremation) so direct-cremation comparison shoppers see the win on both price and quality.
