Casket Market Intelligence Report — Singapore

Because grief is burden enough.

Section 02

Table of Contents

Ten sections, in order. The market and regulatory frame, the competitive set, the pricing reality, the white space, the design gap, and the deck-grounded recommendations that flow from them.

Section 03

Executive Summary

Five anchor findings. Each is backed by the data appendix that follows in Sections 4–10.

  1. The Singapore casket market is structurally opaque. Roughly ~24,000 deaths a year; about ~65% take the wake-and-embalm path bundled into S$8–15K full packages, and ~35% take direct cremation. Inside those packages the casket alone is marked up to S$2,000–S$4,000 — never itemised, by design.
  2. Why Passage wins. All-in transparent S$499 / S$999 / S$1,299 casket-only SKUs vs hidden S$2–4K parlour markup. 3-hour island-wide delivery with 1-hour emergency surge. FSC Chain of Custody, 60% local timber, <5% material waste. Binding 30% of net profit to charity (FY2024 S$48,200 across Singapore Hospice Council, SASCO, Metta Welfare). 47 free caskets given FY2024 (31 social-worker referrals + 16 family applications). Tripartite triple-signatory + Progressive Wage Mark.
  3. Top three white-space niches. (1) Anti-Package Consumer Education — "The S$600 Casket Receipt" aimed at ~5,500 cost-conscious / anti-pressure households per year. (2) Hospital Social-Worker Partnership — free-casket discharge-fast pathway, 200–400 addressable cases/year as referrals compound. (3) Eco / Pre-Arrangement for the FSC-Aware Senior Planner — ~5,700 households of 55–75-year-olds who weight ESG in legacy planning.
  4. Design audit reality. Industry average 6.3 across six SG players on a 5-dimension rubric; Passage scores 6.4, third behind Ang Chin Moh (7.4) and 1Last (7.0). Gap to leader is 1.0 point — almost entirely on visual brand distinctiveness and surfaced credibility proofs. The fix is to surface what already exists: 30% charity meter on the hero, free-casket counter, audited ESG/charity PDF.
  5. Five recommended actions. Surface the 30% charity meter on the homepage hero. Ship an audited FY2024 ESG/Charity PDF download. Build persona-led landing pages for the five ICPs. Live free-casket counter on the hero (47 FY2024). Hospital social-worker discharge-fast pilot with on-call coordinator paging.

Section 06

Pricing Tiers — 2026 SG Reality

What buyers are actually quoted, by tier, by path. Hidden-in-package floors are inferred — funeral parlours do not publish casket-only prices, by design.

Product / Path Hidden-in-Package Mid-tier Transparent Passage DTC
Casket-only (just the casket, all-in) S$2,000 – S$4,000Buried inside package · never itemised Not sold separatelyCasket bundled into transparent full package S$499 / S$999 / S$1,299Serene · Tranquil · Eternal — all-in incl. 3-hr delivery, GST
Wake package (typical bundle) S$8,000 – S$15,0003-day Buddhist / Taoist / Christian rites + venue + embalming + casket S$4,500 – S$9,000Itemised line items, casket clearly priced inside Not offeredPassage sells caskets only — families pair with their own director
Direct cremation (no wake) S$2,500 – S$4,500"No-frills" upsold from full package; casket markup persists S$1,500 – S$3,500Mandai slot + transport + simple casket, fully published S$499 (Serene) + cremation feesFamily books Mandai directly; Passage delivers casket island-wide
Eco / paper / Finoboard casket Generally not stockedConflicts with parlour margin model S$600 – S$1,800The Eco Casket (Selangor), select SG specialists S$499 (Serene, FSC pine)FSC-certified solid timber — locally assembled, sustainably sourced
Footnote on positioning. Passage's S$499–S$1,299 all-in band sits at the bottom of the published casket spectrum, not necessarily at the bottom of the actual price spectrum. Hidden-in-package floors are unknown — parlours never sell caskets separately, so we cannot rule out cheaper trade-cost caskets bundled into S$8K+ packages. Industry estimates above are derived from Straits Times and CNA cost-of-dying coverage 2023–2025, MOH death-certificate records, and Mandai Crematorium scheduling data.
Section 07

White Space & Attack Plans

Strategy canvas across 8 customer-valued dimensions. Passage's shape must break away on transparency, audited charity, free-casket programme, and grief-sensitive UX — dimensions package-based parlours and B2B wholesalers cannot structurally follow.

Top 5 white-space pairs (segment × need)

Lowest count of credible competitors (score ≥3) per segment×need cell. Passage's own score is 5/5 across all five.

Section 09

Recommendations

Five deck-grounded action items. Each one connects a real Passage proof point already on the public site to the place a buyer is most likely to decide.

  1. Surface the 30% charity meter on the homepage hero
Move the binding 30% net profit to charity commitment and the FY2024 S$48,200 across Singapore Hospice Council, SASCO, Metta Welfare totals into the hero zone of index.html and into a persistent strip at the top of every product page. Today this lives only on accreditation.html; the buyer is not reading it where they decide.
  2. Ship an audited FY2024 ESG / Charity PDF download
Add a "Download FY2024 ESG & Charity Report (PDF)" CTA in the accreditation page header and the product-card footer. Quote the binding constitution clause inside. Convert the 4.2 t CO₂e per-casket figure, 60% local timber, FSC Chain of Custody ID, and Tripartite signatures into a single defensible artefact a journalist or a procurement officer can email around.
  3. Persona-led landing pages for the five ICPs
Five distinct entry points: Cost-Conscious Bereaved, Anti-Pressure Consumer, Eco / Values Buyer, Pre-Arrangement Senior, Social-Worker Referral. Each with its own hero copy, its own CTA, and its own proof stack — the cost-conscious page leads with the S$2-4K markup comparison; the social-worker page leads with the FY2024 47-casket programme, the +65 9847 9776 helpline and an eligibility checklist.
  4. Live free-casket counter widget on the hero
A counter that reads "47 free caskets given in FY2024 — and counting" on the homepage hero, updating live as families are accepted into the programme. Pulls from the same data source the audited charity ledger uses, so the counter and the report cannot drift out of sync.
  5. Hospital social-worker pilot — discharge-fast pathway
Direct outreach to SGH / NUH / TTSH / KKH bereavement social workers, MOH-funded nursing-home discharge planners, AIC eldercare and Singapore Hospice Council member teams. One number, one form, one dignified casket within hours. Eligibility checklist printed and PDF, response-time SLA, on-call coordinator paging, surge fee waived for verified welfare-org partners. SASCO and Metta as charity-partner co-branded referral cards.

Competitor intelligence (competitors.json · whitespace-competitors.json)

Triangulated from public competitor websites (Singapore Casket, Ang Chin Moh, Trinity, Nam Shan, Casket Fairprice, Direct Funeral Services, 1Last, Embrace Life, Serenity, Funeral Solutions SG, plus DTC reference players Titan / Costco / Walmart, eco players The Eco Casket / Bamboo Eco / Ecoffins, JB wholesale Millennium / TSTee / Sinseeseng / Soon Teck, and SG craft Roger & Sons / White Artz / Zhen Feng), Straits Times and CNA "cost of dying" coverage 2023–2025, MOH death-certificate records, NEA after-death cremation pricing, and customer review aggregation. Casket-cost markups inside parlour packages are triangulated estimates from family testimonials and ST funeral-cost articles, not directly published.

White-space framework (whitespace-framework.json)

The 8-segment × 8-need matrix and the 8-dimension strategy canvas are derived from the Site Intel ICP list cross-referenced against the eight customer-valued dimensions Passage's deck claims as differentiators. The scoring rubric (segment fit × need fit, capped) is reproducible — see the scoreCompetitor function in White Space Atlas.

Design audit (design-audit.json)

Live site review of six SG funeral category URLs against a 5-dimension rubric scored 1–10. Subjects: Singapore Casket Company, Ang Chin Moh Funeral Directors, Direct Funeral Services, 1Last, Casket Fairprice, plus Passage (self) — assessed honestly. Industry average 6.3, Passage 6.4. Each subject's URL, screenshot capture set, and dimension notes are stored in the JSON and mirrored on Design Audit.
